A cat that is allergic to fleas can have very uncomfortable reactions after only one bite. Serious itching, welts and skin eruptions along with fur loss can be signs of a flea allergy.
Natural Flea Removers If your cat is an outside cat, frequent combings using a flea comb does not only remove the fleas, but it is also a good way to examine your cat. Fleas are more likely to attack cats of ill health. Feeding a proper diet, we recommend a raw diet, will help to keep the fleas at bay. Flea Away is a product containing diatomaceous earth that can be used in beddings and in the house to prevent any flea that makes it to the inside to reproduce. Frequent vacuuming and mopping of floors, running pet beds in a hot dryer etc. are simple, yet effective ways of controlling fleas.
Commercial Cat Flea Medicine
Capstar is available from your vet and is given as a pill. The fleas will literally just fall off and die. Choosing a Flea Preventative Remember that ALL flea medicines are toxic. They contain a nerve toxin in order to kill the flea. By using Advantage, Frontline, Program or any other product for fleas, you are putting a nerve toxin on your cat. Choosing the least toxic product and using it correctly is important in order to minimize your cat's exposure to these toxic chemicals. We really recommend that you NEVER buy over the counter flea drops. Some of them, such as Hartz, has been lethal to many cats. Hartz is now banned. However, the FDA has given Hartz Corp. quite some time to get this very dangerous product off the shelves, and in the meantime it is being sold in pet stores along with Walmart. Another product that has had serious adverse effects is Biospot... While some of these products may be a bit less expensive, it is simply not worth risking your cat's life. Never Use a Flea Product For Dogs On Your Cat Maybe you have both cats and dogs? Why not just use some of the flea prep for the dog on the cat? Ooops. That can be deadly. Cats are much more sensitive to toxins than are dogs. Some of the flea preps for dogs contain chemicals that are lethal to cats. Some of the chemicals used in dogs that can kill your cat are permethrin and pyrethrin. Safeguards for Flea Medicine
