 Keeping your cat flea free is important not just for your cat's sake, but for your own as well.Besides the obvious discomfort of having fleas biting your cat, an allergy to fleas is not uncommon for cats.

Commercial Cat Flea Medicine

There are two kinds of flea preparations for cats. One is the kind that prevents fleas on your cat, the other, Capstar, is a medication to use when your cat is infested with fleas and you need to get rid of them immediately.

Capstar is available from your vet and is given as a pill. The fleas will literally just fall off and die.

Choosing a Flea Preventative

Remember that ALL flea medicines are toxic. They contain a nerve toxin in order to kill the flea. By using Advantage, Frontline, Program or any other product for fleas, you are putting a nerve toxin on your cat.

Choosing the least toxic product and using it correctly is important in order to minimize your cat's exposure to these toxic chemicals. We really recommend that you NEVER buy over the counter flea drops.

Some of them, such as Hartz, has been lethal to many cats. Hartz is now banned. However, the FDA has given Hartz Corp. quite some time to get this very dangerous product off the shelves, and in the meantime it is being sold in pet stores along with Walmart.  Another product that has had serious adverse effects is Biospot...

While some of these products may be a bit less expensive, it is simply not worth risking your cat's life.

Never Use a Flea Product For Dogs On Your Cat Maybe you have both cats and dogs?  Why not just use some of the flea prep for the dog on the cat?

Ooops. That can be deadly. Cats are much more sensitive to toxins than are dogs. Some of the flea preps for dogs contain chemicals that are lethal to cats. Some of the chemicals used in dogs that can kill your cat are permethrin and pyrethrin.

Safeguards for Flea Medicine

1. Get the flea prep from your vet. -Do not buy over the counter. Advantage is probably one of the safest choices.
2. Never use a flea prep designed for dogs on your cat.
3. Follow the directions precisely re. dosage, application etc.
4. Do not use more than necessary. The flea prep companies wants everyone to use their product even in the winter. We recommend to use only as needed. Frequently, even in the summer, applications at half the recommended rate can be enough to keep your kitty flea-free.
